ChatGPT on mobile is a sleeping giant
ChatGPT's web dominance masks a crucial insight about AI adoption.
Here's what the latest Andreessen Horowitz consumer AI rankings reveal:
1️⃣ ChatGPT is the Number 1 consumer AI website and app
2️⃣ When ChatGPT 4o came out in spring 2024, it coincided with a significant spike in monthly web traffic
3️⃣ ChatGPT mobile app usage is on a steady climb. Sensor Tower estimates that 44% (175 million) of ChatGPT's 400 million weekly active users use the mobile app.
But...
🌐 Web traffic might be a misleading indicator for ChatGPT's true consumer impact.
Professional developers and businesses dominate desktop usage, writing complex prompts and testing integrations for their workflows.
📱ChatGPT mobile app engagement tells a different story.
Mobile users likely favor brief, conversational interactions that better reflect true consumer patterns.
Obviously there will be some crossover on the web - intermingling of professional prompting and consumer-related queries. It's similar to how people use Google to mix professional and consumer-related searches over the course of the day.
Still, I can't help but look at examples of ChatGPT mobile use cases like this one from Lauren Morgenstein Schiavone and believe consumers will use ChatGPT on mobile far more than desktop over time.
