Will consumer AI platforms feel the Oprah effect?

Next week's Oprah Winfrey show on AI could do a LOT to change the average person's impressions of AI. Is it for better or for worse? I'll be watching.

In the meantime, I'll drop these datapoints:

Even if web users are using an AI platform, 99 percent of them are still using traditional search. And most likely that was Google.  That was one of the top findings in the research I recently published with my partner Datos, A Semrush Company.

In addition, only about 16 percent of web users in a sample that I looked at were using AI platforms as of May 2024

If you're saying "wow, that's low," (and most of you probably are), that's because you are an outlier. The typical American consumer is far less likely to use AI for search.

I posted the video below on LinkedIn (it’s a clip from my recent interview with MediaPost), and it went a bit viral - more than 4.5 million impressions so far!
